WVCIDC Achievements

Congratulations!!

West Valley College’s community service project Jeremiah’s House, has been selected for the 2007-2008 ASID Community Service Project of the Year.

2007 - 2008 has been a very strong school year for the West Valley Interior Design Club (WVCIDC), and as a result, we would like to share some of the those achievements among students, staff, and professional affiliations. Many of you have dedicated your time and hard work into planning, coordinating, and implementing a number of invaluable events to students.

WVCIDC has submitted 6 nominations to the various ASID award categories to recognize those contributions. Those applications are indicated below:

1) Outstanding Student Chapter of the Year: Joanna Godinho-Khan, with contributions from Hila Berezovsky, provided a WVCIDC Portfolio showcasing the deliverables of individuals as well as WVCIDC teams' dedication to providing quality resources to students.

  • Outstanding Student Chapter President (Special Request) : Although this category is not official, we have submitted a request to create this new category for leadership excellence in the student chapter.

2) SRB of the Year: The Student Representative of the Board is awarded for demonstrating "exemplary dedication to his or her position, and service to his or her chapter".

3) Fundraiser of the Year: An award is given to those student chapters which have "unique, productive, and carefully conceived" fundraisers. The WVCIDC and its members have created fundraising events that empower students with pratical information necessary to secure an internship and/or employment." See the Career Day Video for yourself!

4) Community Service Project of the Year: The ASID Community Service Project award is given each year to those chapters who seek to positively address the community needs through their designs.

This year WVCIDC has submitted two projects for nomination:

  • Community Service Project 1 (CASA Activity Room): The goal of this project was to create a "warm, fun, healing space for foster care children and a meeting area for their advocates."
  • Community Service Project 2 (Jeremiah's Promise): This project promoted the importance of community gathering to motivated young women who have left the foster care systems.

5) Website of the Year: This nomination is for "an innovative and informative web site".

6) Faculty Advisor of the Year: This nomination awards the faculty advisor and recognizes the individual for their "dedication and insightfulness."

This is our 2nd year where the WVCIDC has held a Career Day event in which 100+ students participated. The program was design to continue our mission in empowering students to succeed through knowledge and experience.

The recent Legislation Workshop held on June 20th was very successful. The dialogues were light, humorous, and kept the attendees engaged. Many positive comments!

Speakers included Bruce Goff, Linda Newton, and Greg Price, Judy Hen, the president of IDCC (Interior Design Coalition of California), also attended and observed the meeting. Nancy Wolfword of Canada College was also in attendance.

SHORT SUMMARY

  • Bill SB 1312 has not been killed! it is being modified to include more provisions regarding community colleges, and will be re-introduced next year
  • Almost ALL community college Interior Design curriculum qualify
  • In most cases your interior design work experience before or after your education will be recognized (some designers have practiced for years before going to school.)
  • A bachelor’s degree in interior design is NOT required, certificates, diplomas and coursework count.
  • Your interior design experience does not have to be under a registered interior designer or licensed architect
  • There is no CIDA or FIDER accreditation required to qualify your education
  • NCIDQ will be conforming its qualification criteria to the California Registration Board for California designers
  • Currently you can be certified designer (Title Act) but not registered. There are several ways to become a certified designer in State of California. You still need an architect to stamp your construction documents for the permit process. The legislation provides accountability by Registering Interior Designers (Practice Act) and get your construction documents through the permit process without the need for a licensed architect to review and stamp them. NCIDQ is a National exam, not just for California.
  • there are several exclusions in that does not require registration for specific types of design: Selecting Finishes for example
  • Registration is voluntary and depends on the nature of the services you provide. If you are not registered you will not be able to use “ Registered Interior Designer” as your title. But you are still an “Interior Designer”. You will NOT be put of BUSINESS.
